Loving Day!

Today, June 12, is "Loving Day."  

Loving Day is an annual celebration to commemorate the 1967 US Supreme Court decision between the Lovings (an interracial couple) vs. Virginia.  Before this date it was illegal for people of different races to marry; there were US State Laws banning interracial marriages. 

Here’s a little history ~~ In 1958 Mildred Loving, a woman of African-American and Rappahannock Native American descent married Richard Loving, a white man in Washington D.C.  When they moved back to their home town in Virginia they were soon arrested because they were violating a state law and charged with “cohabitating as man and wife, against the peach and dignity of the Commonwealth.”  They decided to move back to Washington D.C. and started legal actions.  U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy referred the case to the American Civil Liberties Union.  The Warren Court unanimously ruled in favor of the Lovings and they moved back to Virginia – living as husband and wife and having 3 children.
